What is a Justice of the Peace

Justices of the peace are elected to four-year terms by the voters and serve as judges in justice court. Judge Wilson has been the Justice of the Peace for Precinct 9 since 2019. He was last re-elected in 2020.

What does a Justice of the Peace do?

Most people think of a justice of the peace performing wedding ceremonies. While that is an important public service, in Arizona, justices of the peace do much more. Justice courts handle many different types of cases, including criminal misdemeanors, civil disputes involving less than $10,000, orders of protection, and felony preliminary hearings. Justices of the peace are also called upon to review search warrants and felony arrest warrants for probable cause, serving as an important check on the power of law enforcement.

On any given day, justices of the peace are called upon to ensure that the rights of all parties are protected throughout the court process, regardless of the type of case involved.
